Event pays tribute to US firefighters who perished on 9/11 and honors Cyprus’ Fire Service

On the 20th anniversary of the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks, an event was held at Lefkotheo stadium in Nicosia to pay tribute to the 343 American firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty on that day and also to honor Cypriot fire fighters who battled wildfires in Cyprus and Greece this summer.

Dozens of people, among them Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulides, Minister of Justice and Public Order Stefi Drakos, US Ambassador to Nicosia Judith Garber, ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Fire Service and the National Guard attended the event organized by the US Embassy in Nicosia and walked a 2071 step challenge, the same number of steps those 343 first responders climbed on September 11th 2001 to reach the top of the World Trade Center to save peoples’ lives
