Europeans should not be burdened with increased energy costs, says Cypriot official at Energy meeting

“The European consumer should not be burdened with increased energy costs” on the basis of the new European strategy for moving to a prosperous modern, competitive and climate neutral economy by the year 2050, said Dr. Stelios Himonas, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, during his intervention at the Council of Ministers of Energy meeting in Brussels.

Himonas reiterated the Republic of Cypruss intention to assume a coordinating role at the regional level to address the consequences of climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is important, on the one hand, that the European Union maintains a leading role, ensuring that non-European partners will also follow a similar course to tackle climate change, Himonas noted.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary also noted that the new EU Strategy should be in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the adverse effects of which are already evident in the Eastern Mediterranean region. He also referred to the energy security of the Member States of the Union, stating that for this purpose “we are promoting the development of natural gas reserves and the necessary infrastructure in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
