European elections voting up by 1% compared to 2014, turnout by 15:00 hours at 29%

Turnout in Cyprus by 15:00 hours (12:00 hours GMT), stood at 29% at the European elections today, which is up by 1% compared to the European elections of 2014.

Chief Returning Officer Kypros Kyprianou said that the turn-out for Turkish Cypriots reached 5.2% compared to 2.25% at the same time in the European elections of 2014.

He also reiterated the significance of the elections and appealed to citizens to exercise their democratic right.

At the same time, in the 2014 European elections turn out was 28%, in the parliamentary elections of 2016 it was 46% and in the presidential elections of 2018 it was 51%.

The Chief Returning Officer also said that until now 4,204 Turkish Cypriots have exercised their right to vote over a total of 80,862 who are

registered in the electoral roll.

Kyprianou also said that in Famagusta District there is an increase of 4%, in polls abroad an increase of 6% and in the poll stations for Turkish Cypriots an increase of 3% compared to the previous European elections.

Asked about complaints regarding unwanted sms messages by parties or candidates he said that the Data Protection Commissioner has confirmed there are 4 to 5 proven complaints. Other complainants will need to provide evidence, he added. Complaints range between 10 and 20, sources have said.

Until 1500 hours local time, turnout in Nicosia District was 34%, compared to 33% in the European elections of 2014, 46% in the parliamentary elections of 2016 and 48% in the presidential elections of 2018.

At the same time, turnout in Limassol District stood at 30%, compared to 29% in the European elections of 2014, 47% in the parliamentary elections of 2016 and 48% in the presidential elections of 2018.

In Famagusta District turnout stood at 31% compared to 27% in the European elections of 2014, 45% in the parliamentary elections of 2016 and 50% in the presidential elections of 2018.

In Larnaca District turnout stood at 32% compared to 31% in the European elections of 2014, 45% in the parliamentary elections of 2016 and 50% in the presidential elections of 2018.

In Pafos District, turnout reached 31%, compared to 30% in the European elections of 2014, 49% in the parliamentary elections of 2016 and 53% in the presidential elections of 2018.

In polling stations abroad, turnout stood at 38% at 15:00 hours compared to 32% in the European elections of 2014, 39% in the parliamentary elections of 2016 and 40% in the presidential elections of 2018.
