EUROPE: Spike in UK nationals seeking a Cyprus passport

Hundreds of UK Cypriots alarmed over losing their rights as European Union citizens in the aftermath of Brexit, are applying for a Cyprus passport.

Britain’s decision to leave the EU has mobilized the Cypriot community in the UK, especially third and fourth generation Cypriots, to apply for a Cyprus passport.

Currently there are some 350,000 people of Cypriot origin living in the UK.

According to Ministry of Interior statistics, in 2016 a total of 527 persons of Cypriot origin who were born or reside in Great Britain obtained a passport from EU-member Cyprus.

Following the Brexit referendum in 2016, this figure increased with 711 UK Cypriots obtaining a passport in 2017, recording an increasing of 34% compared to the previous year.

In 2018, 818 UK nationals of Cypriot origin who were born or reside in the UK had a Cyprus passport issued, an increase of 55% compared to 2016 and 15% compared to 2017.

In the first quarter of 2019, 286 UK Cypriots have already obtained a passport, with the final number for the year expected to reach 1,000.

Cypriots living in the UK can apply for a passport directly to the Ministry of the Interior, or at the Cyprus High Commission in London.

Cyprus High Commissioner in London Euripides Evriviades told Politis newspaper: “From 2016, when the Brexit referendum was held, each year the number of applications for Cypriot citizenship has doubled. Thus, we have seen an increase of 1000% in applications compared to the pre-Brexit era, applications in 2018 reached 353, while in 2014 we only received 38”.

He said the High Commission, “calculates the number of applications we expect to receive will be twice as many as last year, reaching 700.”
