EU technical team agrees with Cypriot authorities to enhance assistance over migration

A technical team from the European Commission, visiting Cyprus to assess the country’s needs in dealing with disproportionate migratory pressure, took part in a meeting, on Tuesday, at the Interior Ministry with officials from competent services. They agreed to make further use of European mechanisms dealing with migration flows.

According to an Interior Ministry announcement, the technical team discussed with representatives from various government services ways to enhance technical assistance in asylum and migration issues, through the Emergency Funds of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

At the meeting, the European Commission agreed to assist in improving the administrative structure and existing facilities.

Moreover, it was agreed to support asylum seekers in relation to their accommodation and take further steps concerning the return of migrants, through the use of digital platforms, legal aid and better integration.

The technical team is in Cyprus after a visit of EU Commissioner Avramopoulos and the interventions by the President of Cyprus and the Interior Minister to the European Council and the Council of the EU respectively, in relation to migration flows in Cyprus.
