EU Commission welcomes new conference on the Cyprus issue and stands ready to help

The European Commission welcomes the prospect of another conference on the Cyprus issue and stands ready to aid the process, stated today, Margaritis Schinas the Chief Spokesman of the EC.

More specifically, Schinas, answering CNA question, said that: “we welcome the outcome of the working dinner of the 2 leaders and the Secretary General, on Sunday night in New York.”

“As you rightfully say the EU is mentioned in the communique. On behalf of the EC and President Juncker I would like to reiterate our commitment to continue to be able to help in this process”, the Chief Spokesman said.

On Sunday evening, the leaders of Cyprus’ two communities, President Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci and the UN Secretary-General agreed on the need to reconvene the Conference on Cyprus in June in line with the 12 January statement of the conference, the UN has announced.

The Special Adviser of the Secretary-General, Espen Barth Eide, will engage with all participants in the preparation of a common document to guide the discussions on security and guarantees, based on the outcome of the meetings of the conference on Cyprus in Geneva and Mont Pelerin.

Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in peace talks since May 2015 to find a negotiated settlement to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
