Enhanced transparency procedures in Parliaments important, says House Speaker

Enhancing transparency through parliaments will help tackle the phenomena of nationalism and populism due to the many challenges the countries face nowadays because of the migration and the refugee crisis, House Speaker Dimitris Syllouris has said.

Addressing on Monday the Conference of Speakers of EU Parliaments, in Bratislava, Syllouris said, according to a press release by the Cyprus House, that the public should always be informed, adding that the citizens in order to have a public opinion should have access to parliamentary work. He referred to the key objectives of the Cyprus House and the decisions that were taken to this end in order to bring the Parliament closer to the people.

Syllouris said that measures have also been taken to encourage the participation of citizens in the discussions of various bills.

The Bratislava Conference adopted Conclusions including the final details on the establishment of the Joint Parliamentary Control Group on the activities of the EU Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol).
