Employment in broad public sector up annually in Q3 2018

Employment in the broad public sector during the third quarter of this year was up on annual basis by 1.57% but dropped by 1.97% on a quarterly basis, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service on Friday show.

The employment in the Broad Public Sector for the 3rd quarter of 2018 was 66,698 persons, the Statistical Service says in a press release.

Employment in the general government was 60,777 and in the state-owned enterprises and companies was 5,921.

In the general government which consists of the government, non-profit organisations and local authorities the number of employees was 51,488, 5,031 and 4,258 people respectively.

Employment in the broad public sector increased by 1,034 persons or 1.57% compared to the same quarter of 2017, the press release says.

Employment in the central government increased by 1,001 persons (1.80%) and in state – owned enterprises and companies by 37 persons (0.63%) while a drop is observed in local authorities by 4 persons (-0.09%).

Compared to the second quarter of 2018, employment in the broad public sector fell by 1,338 persons (-1.97%). Employment in central government decreased by 1,386 persons (-2.39%) while in local authorities increased by 26 persons (0.61%) and in state-owned enterprises and companies by 22 persons (0.37%).
