Eide to hand draft joint document to Greek Cypriot negotiator on Wednesday

The UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, will be handing over to Greek Cypriot negotiator, Andreas Mavroyiannis, the first draft of the joint document he has prepared ahead of the talks in Geneva between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

According to sources, Mavroyiannis will be meeting with Eide at 10:00 local time on Wednesday and will then have separate meetings with the leaders of political parties, whom he will brief about the draft. Meetings with party leaders will also be held on Thursday and Friday.

President Anastasiades, who will be flying to Brussels on Wednesday for the European Council, will be briefed about the draft joint document by Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides.

In the meantime, President Anastasiades has been briefed about the meeting between Eide and the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 with a view to reunify the island under a federal roof.
