Education Minister signs three CoE Conventions in Strasbourg

Minister of Education and Culture Costas Kadis signed on Thursday three Conventions of the Council of Europe (CoE), in the presence of CoE Secretary General ThorbjA�rn Jagland, in Strasbourg.

According to a relevant announcement, released by PIO, the first Convention on Fighting the Manipulation of Sports Competitions aims at protecting athletic ethics, in accordance with the principle of autonomy of sport.

The second Convention on Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Sports Events and mainly at football matches is a binding international instrument in establishing a common approach in the areas of security, protection and services.

The third Convention on Cinematographic co-production, binds the parties to encourage the development of European cinematographic co-production between them and with third countries.

During his meeting with Secretary General ThorbjA�rn Jagland, Kadis reassured him that all relevant Departments of the Republic of Cyprus will work towards the implementation of the Conventions and stressed the longstanding commitment of Cyprus to the principles and values of the Council of Europe.

It is added that later this evening, Kadis will attend a concert of the Cypriot band Monsieur Doumani. This concert is the last cultural event organised by the Cyprus Presidency in Strasbourg.

Among tonight’s audience will be the 70 participants of the Youth Peace Camp, including 12 young Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The Youth Peace Camp was organized under the Cyprus Presidency in Strasbourg and involved young people from regions that have been affected by conflicts in the past.

On Wednesday, Kadis informed the Deputy Ministers on the conclusions of the Ministerial Conference Securing Democracy through Education, which was held in Nicosia on March 22-23, under the Cypriot Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

“Cyprus stands ready to continue offering its services in order to develop further synergies for promoting democracy through education with Mediterranean partners”, Kadis told Deputy Ministers.

It was decided that the conclusions of the Ministerial Conference will be used for future actions of the Council of Europe. Kadis called finally on the Council of Europe to set up a platform to share good practices for promoting Democracy through education, the announcement concludes.
