EC President Tusk to represent Cyprus President Anastasiades at Sunday’s Special meeting of the European Council

European Council President Donald Tusk will represent Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades at Sunday’s special meeting of the European Council after the latter underwent surgery for a fractured hip on Saturday.

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou told reporters that after consultations made by the Foreign Minister, the President of the European Council Mr. Donald Tusk will represent the President of the Republic at the meeting where the leaders’ talks will continue on nominations for the EUs top jobs.

Prodromou said President Anastasiades, who was planning to depart on Sunday for Brussels, was planning to actively participate and potentially play a role in the consultations and decisions that will be taken, adding that apart from the issue that concerns the EU, there is also the Cyprus issue.

During the 20th June European Council meeting, the leaders adopted President Anastasiades’s recommendation for targeted measures against Turkey. The European Council discussed Thursday the issue of illegal Turkish activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus, raised by President Anastasiades.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Last month Turkey issued a navigational telex, announcing its intention to start drilling off Cyprus until September 3.

Since May 4, the Turkish drill ship Fatih, accompanied by three service ships, is located in an area that falls within the EEZ and continental shelf of the Republic of Cyprus.
