Deliberations on the second day of the Conference on Cyprus begin, as Feltman departs

Deliberations on the second day of the Conference on Cyprus began on Thursday with the issue of security and guarantees.

The two sides, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, are expected to give their answers to three questions posed by the UN Under Secretary-General Jeffrey Feltman.

The UN senior official has already left to return to New York. The UNSG Antonio Guterres is scheduled to arrive on Friday in Crans Montana, Switzerland, where the Conference on Cyprus is taking place.

Feltman’s departure, according to reliable sources, had been scheduled and the UN are represented at the talks by Espen Barth Eide, Guterres’ Special Adviser on Cyprus.

During the first day of the conference, Feltman posed three questions which he said he would like the discussion to concentrate on: first how the two sides see the day after a solution, second how the concerns of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on the issue of security will be addressed and the third question relates to the mechanism for the implementation of a solution.

The Conference on Cyprus is set to continue until 11am local time, followed by a discussion on territory, property and governance between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.

The Conference on Cyprus, being held under the auspices of the United Nations, started on Wednesday morning at Le Regent Congress Centre in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, with a view to reaching a negotiated settlement that would reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
