Defense Minister meets with Chairman of the European Union Military Committee

The Cyprus problem, the Turkish provocations in the islands exclusive economic zone and Cyprus participation in EU operations were discussed on Friday during a meeting Defense Minister SavvasAngelides had with the Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, General Claudio Graziano who is visiting Nicosia.

The General met also with President NicosAnastasiades and the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General IliasLeontaris.

According to a press release, the Minister pledged Cyprus support in the EU integration and briefed the General on Cyprus capabilities to participate in various EU operations when needed.

They also discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus issue and Turkeys provocations in the exclusive economic zone.

During the meeting they also touched upon the EU-NATO relations and Cyprus participation in PESCO , the Permanent Structure Cooperation of the EU.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. The latest round of negotiations under the UN aegis ended inconclusively in the summer of 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans Montana.
