Defence Minister to pay official visit to Egypt

The Minister of Defence, Mr Christoforos Fokaides, departs today for Cairo, where he will pay an official visit, following an invitation of his Egyptian counterpart, Colonel General Sedki Sobhi.

Minister Fokaides, who is officially visiting Egypt for the 3rd time, will have a tA�te-A�-tA�te meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, followed by deliberations between the delegations of the two countries.

The visit is held in the context of the close and friendly relations of Cyprus and Egypt in the fields of defence and security and it takes place in the light of the new terrorist attacks in the neighboring country against the Christians of Egypt.

During the visit of Minister Fokaides’ visit, the Bilateral Military Cooperation Annual Programme is expected to be signed, in the framework of the Military Cooperation Programme signed last year.

Issues on the agenda of the meeting include, inter alia, the bilateral relations, the regional security and the latest developments in the Syrian crisis, as well as the strengthening of the cooperation against terrorism. Also, issues will be examined regarding the cooperation in the fields of maritime and energy security and crisis management. Moreover, the Minister of Defence will brief his counterpart on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem.
