Defence Minister meets with British Minister of State for the Armed Forces

The Minister of Defence, Mr Christoforos Fokaides, had a meeting today, at his office, with the Minister of State for the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom, Mr Michael Penning, who is visiting Cyprus.

During the meeting, the developing relations of the two countries in the fields of security and defence were reviewed, and ways for further cooperation were examined. Both sides agreed that this cooperation gives tangible results as regards the efforts to address the new challenges of security and asymmetrical threats.

Mr Fokaides said that the cooperation with the United Kingdom not only serves the interests of the two countries, but also the common interest and the perspective of the wider region. He also referred to the initiatives undertaken by Cyprus for the promotion of conditions of stability and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the relations the country develops with almost all its neighboring countries in the areas of defence and security. Finally, he stressed that the potential solution to the Cyprus problem should not undermine Cyprus’ possibility to constitute a security and stability pillar in this troubled and unstable region.

On his part, the British Minister said that the United Kingdom acknowledges the efforts and the role of Cyprus in the region, as well as the relations it maintains with its neighboring countries, and underlined the very good relation the two countries enjoy and the important steps made in bilateral level over the last years, in the framework of the two countries’ upgraded cooperation.
