Defence Minister meets German Defence State Secretary at military airbase

Cypriot Minister of Defence Christoforos Fokaides met on Monday with German State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Defence Marcus Grubel at the Andreas Papandreou military airbase in Paphos.

Speaking after the meeting, Fokaides said that Cyprus has recently upgraded its bilateral relations with German and has signed an agreement for the exchange of services, while various cooperation programmes are being developed.

Fokaides said they discussed various issues concerning cooperation on a bilateral and European level.

He added that Cyprus has been providing facilities to a German task force in UNFIIL, noting that Grubel thanked Cyprus for its assistance and the role it plays within the EU, in the light of the new defence union, with the establishment of PESCO, of which Cyprus is a founding member.

Fokaides said that Cyprus is cooperating with Germany and its other partners in order to achieve the best possible protection and security of the EU and European interests, especially in the direction of addressing threats and crises, and creating conditions of stability and security.

He furthermore noted that Cyprus has expressed its readiness and will to contribute in this direction with the use of the airbase in Paphos and the naval base in Zygi.

Grubel will be staying in Cyprus for one day.
