Defence Minister discusses ways to enhance strategic partnership with Israel

The strategic value of the relations between Cyprus and Israel in the areas of defence and security in which the two countries play a vital role in the volatile region of Eastern Mediterranean, were among the issues discussed during a meeting Defence Minister Savvas Angelides has with his counterpart Avigdor Liberman. Angelides paid an official visit to Israel following an invitation by Liberman with whom they exchanged views on practical ways of enhancing the bilateral cooperation.

A press release by the Ministry said that Angelides briefed his counterpart on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem following Turkeys provocations in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone. They both expressed their will to strengthen Cyprus-Israel defense cooperation, which is linked to the common vision of effectively dealing with the asymmetric threats and other challenges in the region, as well as with promoting stability and security.

The Minister was also received by Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilus III in Jerusalem. The Minister expressed his support for the work the Patriarch is doing in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate. He also visited the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial where he placed a wreath.
