December 2023 the second warmest December recorded since 1961


December 2023 has been the second warmest December recorded since 1961, according to the Monthly Weather Bulletin.

It said that the average temperature was 14.5C which was about 3 degrees C above normal, while the average rainfall was 50.4mm or 48% of normal for the month. Total rainfall during the period October 2023 – December 2023 was approximately 133.1mm or 69% of normal.

Noting that no extreme phenomena were recorded, it said that however on the 11th of December due to intense storm activity, areas of Nicosia and Larnaca were left without electricity. Main features of this month were severe drought and high temperatures recorded throughout the island.

The average temperature for the month was about 2.9C above normal. Average daily temperatures were above or near normal throughout the month, except on the 10th of December in Prodromos in the Troodos mountains where it dropped 2.3C below normal.

Maximum temperatures in Athalassa station in Nicosia exceeded 18C during all days of the month, in Paphos
and Larnaca they exceeded 19C during the whole month, while in Prodromos in the mountains they exceeded 8C in 30 occasions.

Most meteorological stations recorded their highest maximum temperature between 4-5 of December and their lowest temperature on 19-20 and 24 of the month.
