Cyprus-UK relations stronger than ever, Prime Minister Sunak says

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak said that the Cyprus-UK relations are stronger than ever.

The Prime Minister sent a reply letter to the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, according to a written statement issued on Monday by Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos.

Pelekanos said that the Prime Minister underlined UK’s position as regards the solution of the Cyprus issue. He reiterated, the Spokesperson said, his country’s support for the negotiation process under the auspices of the UN and on the agreed solution framework, based on a bi-zonal bi-communal federation with political equality.

A solution, the Premier said, according to Pelekanos, which will strengthen security and stability in the region, as well as Cyprus’ prosperity, stressing at the same time that the United Kingdom opposes any actions that undermine the prospects of achieving a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

Prime Minister thanked President Anastasiades for his contribution during his ten-year tenure to the further deepening of the bilateral relations, making special reference to the agreement for the development of areas within the British Bases.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.
