Cyprus to host a meeting of APA’s standing committee for the first time

Cyprus will host for the first time the Asian Parliamentary Assemblys Standing Committee Meeting on Economic and Substainable Development.

The meeting, which will take place in the Pissouri area, Limassol, will be opened on Tuesday by President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris.

The meeting is being held at the initiative of Cypriot MP Nikos Tornaritis following his election as President of this Committee and as Vice-President of APA.

A press release by the Cyprus Parliament notes that the meeting is of great importance for Cyprus since it strengthens its position as a bridge between Europe and Asia, but also its bilateral relations with many Asian countries.

Parliamentary delegations from 19 countries will participate in the gathering, including Afghanistan, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Iran, Cambodia, Peoples Republic of China, Kuwait, Maldives, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Pakistan, Palestine, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Thailand.

The opening ceremony will also be attended by leaders or representatives of the political parties of Cyprus, as well as Ambassadors stationed in Nicosia.

The main topic of discussion will be the draft resolutions on the role of parliaments in poverty eradication efforts, climate change response, water management, as well as the management of renewable energy sources. The draft resolutions to be adopted will be referred to the next plenary session of the APA.
