Cyprus solution must be functional providing for a fully independent state, President says

The solution of the Cyprus problem must be functional and the state fully independent, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said.

President Anastasiades was speaking to the press after attending the doxology for the celebration of the national day of the October 28, 1940, at the Cathedral of Agios Ioannis, at the Archbishopric of Cyprus. Later on, the President received the salute of the student parade in front of the Greek Embassy in Nicosia.

Replying to journalists questions, the President said that if we want to avoid the danger or dilemma of discussing other forms of solution, either confederation or two states, it must be understood that in order to achieve what has been set as a goal, then the solution must be functional and the state fully independent.

Asked if he will inform the Cypriot people about developments on the Cyprus issue, President Anastasiades said that after his meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s representative Jane Holl Lute he will proceed to a full analysis about what and how he thinks and what are the choices before the people in the sense that we either choose a functional and independent state entity or we are eventually led to a new failure or the suffering that comes along with a dysfunctional solution or a state entity that will be a tool of an another country .

Invited to say what are his expectations from his forthcoming meeting with Lute, President Anastasiades said that it will be an exploratory mission saying that do not expect she will bring concrete ideas.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
