Cyprus solution exclusively depends on Turkey’s stance, says House President

It is obvious that the Cyprus solution does not depend on us but on Turkeys stance, who is deploying an aggressive behaviour, House President Demetris Syllouris said and pointed out that we need to have consensus and be united to tackle the challenges.

Speaking at the memorial service for EOKAs hero Yiorgos Papaverkiou, Syllouris said that we have a moral responsibility and obligation to carry on fighting to safeguard the interests of our country and draw lessons from the heroes of the EOKA struggle against British rule of Cyprus in the second half of 1950s.

Syllouris said that we need to stay united and be committed in resolving the problems that arise and especially in finding a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem. He added that we need to fulfil our obligation towards all those who have been sacrificed for our country and make sure that we face the challenges and give room to Cyprus to grow and prosper.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks commenced at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana on June 28, but in the early hours of July 7, it was announced that the Conference on Cyprus ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.
