Cyprus signed the Additional Protocol on the Prevention of Terrorism

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus and Chairman of the Committee of Ministers, Ioannis Kasoulides, signed on Monday the Additional Protocol to the Council of Europe’s Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism.

The signing took place in the presence of CoE Secretary General ThorbjA�rn Jagland.

The Protocol aims at preventing and limiting the flows of foreign terrorist fighters to countries such as Syria and Iraq, by criminalising participation in a terrorist group or travelling abroad for the purpose of terrorism, as well as training, organising or funding travel for that purpose.

The treaty has been signed by 29 countries so far and ratified by 6 others.

According to the UN’s estimations (April 2015), over 25 000 foreigners worldwide have joined the ranks of the Islamic State or Al-Qaeda.
