Cyprus records two deaths and 1,774 new COVID-19 cases between May 20 and 26

Two deaths and 1,774 new COVID-19 cases were recorded between May 20 and 26, Cyprus’ Health Ministry said on Friday.

According to the Ministry, 74,539 tests were carried out in the past week while the positivity rate was at 2.38%.

The deaths concern a man, aged 77 and a 74-year-old woman. This brings the total number of deaths from COVID-19 to 1,059, while 489,963 cases have been recorded since the beginning of the pandemic.

Thirty patients with COVID-19 are being treated in hospital, eight of whom in serious condition. One patient is intubated and another four are being treated in intensive care units. Three patients are in high dependency units.

Ten post-COVID patients continue to be intubated in ICUs.

During the past week, 5,133 PCR tests and 69,406 rapid tests were carried out.

Three of the latest cases were detected through contact tracing, and 1,632 cases were detected during testing on private initiative.

Another 91 cases emerged as part of the Health Ministry’s testing programmes, while 63 cases were detected at the testing sites.

Two cases emerged in the National Guard, 25 in nursing homes, and one case in closed structures.
