Cyprus ready to assume a regional coordinating role on climate change, says Environment Minister

Cyprus is willing to take on a coordinating role ,on a regional level, on climate change, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment Costas Kadis has said.

Kadis is attending the UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 24) taking place in the city of Katowice, Poland. In his intervention on Wednesday the Cyprus Minister pointed out the need to define an action plan for the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement.

He referred to the region of southeastern Mediterranean and how it is affected by the climate change and he briefed the participants on the initiative of President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and his readiness for Cyprus to assume a coordinating role. The CO24 so far addressed the urgent need to step up global efforts to avoid the consequences of climate change and highlighted the opportunities and benefits of a global transition to sustainable, climate-resilient, low-emission economies.

Reference was also made to the recent scientific findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its special report on the effects of global warming , which demonstrates the urgent need to strengthen the global response to this end.

COP24 is concluded on December 14 with the adoption of a Declaration.
