Cyprus President travels to New York to attend dinner with Secretary General and Akinci

The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades departs for New York on Saturday afternoon, in order to attend tomorrow a working dinner with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mustafa Akinci.

According to an announcement by the Presidency, the dinner will be hosted by the UN Secretary-General at the UN Headquarters at 7.00pm, New York time.

The President of the Republic will be accompanied in New York by the Government Spokesman and Director of the Diplomatic Office of the President Nikos Christodoulides, and the Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis.

Guterres has invited the two leaders to NY on Sunday evening to discuss the state of play in the UN-facilitated peace talks and the way forward.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-backed talks since May 2015 with a view to reunify the island under a federal roof.
