Cyprus President to hold important meetings during EU-Arab League Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh

Important bilateral meetings with Heads of States in the region are included in the agenda of President Nicos Anastasiades’ visit to Sharm El-Sheikh in order to participate in the EU-Arab League Summit.

President Anastasiades departs for Egypt Sunday and during his presence there he is set to promote Cyprus’ initiative to play a coordinating role in introducing policies and strategies by the countries of the region to tackle climate change. The EU-League of Arab States (LAS) summit will bring together for the first time heads of state or government from both sides.

European Council President Donald Tusk will co-chair the meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. He will represent the EU along with Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou told the press on Thursday that the Cyprus President will meet, inter alia, with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Lebanese Premier Saad Hariri and Kind Abdullah of Jordan.

He said that these meetings give the opportunity to further promote and enhance the bilateral cooperation as well as the trilateral cooperation and to point out Cyprus’ role as a European pillar of stability and as a state that can boost security in the region by playing its role in the area.

Prodromou pointed out the importance of the Summit saying that it can underline EU’s role and the relation it can build with the countries in the region.

He spoke of Cyprus’ role as an EU member state and a country that has friendly relations with neighboring countries. The Spokesman said that Cyprus’ strategies and foreign policy, further stabilizes its regional role.

According to Prodromou this is one of the reasons the President from the beginning developed initiatives and supported the expansion of relations between the EU and the Arab world, having a significant contribution and role in the EU Council for the Summit to take place.

He said that it is fundamental for the EU to have a role in issues of security and stability in the region, adding that Cyprus has significant interests to this end.

As regards the President’s initiative for climate change the Spokesman said that it is important to develop joint actions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East on climate change issues. He spoke about the meeting the President had yesterday with world-renowned professor Jeffrey Sachs during which they exchanged ideas on sustainable development. He said that Professor Sachs praised the President’s initiative and added that the government will take more initiatives and make more efforts in order to address climate change in the region. Professor Jeffrey Sachs is a world-renowned professor of economics, leader in sustainable development and senior UN advisor. The Professor is also Member of The Cyprus Institute Board of Trustees.
