Cyprus President meets with negotiating team ahead of UN SG’s envoy visit

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades meets on Monday afternoon with the negotiating team for the Cyprus problem, at the Presidential Palace, in view of a visit in the island of UN Secretary Generals envoy Jane Holl Lute and the sought after resumption of talks for a Cyprus settlement, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou has told CNA.

Prodromou, who was replying to a CNA question on the matter, said that the meeting will take place “in view of the cooperation with Lute, the terms of reference and the sought after resumption of negotiations.”

Replying to an additional question he said President Anastasiades “will listen to the views of the negotiating teams members and will discuss with them, so that he can be better prepared for the cooperation with Lute.”

Lute is set to be in Cyprus next weekend. The government has repeatedly said it looks forward to her arrival and has stated the wish for the terms of reference for the resumption of talks to be agreed on.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
