Cyprus President discusses proposal for EU initiative on Cyprus problem with Macron

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades will have on Thursday a meeting in Paris with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron. According to a written statement by the Director of the President’s Press Office, Andreas Iosif, Anastasiades will discuss with Macron about the current situation as regards the Cyprus problem and the proposal for the EU to undertake an initiative on the issue in cooperation with the UN for the resumption of the process for a Cyprus settlement.

According to the Cypriot Presidency, the meeting will take place at 1745 (Cyprus time) at the presidential office.

It will also be attended by Government Spokesman, Marios Pelekanos, the Ambassador of Cyprus to France, George Shakallis and the Director of the President’s office, Pantelis Pantelides.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
