Cyprus President conveys message of cooperation to political parties

_: President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has conveyed to all parliamentary political parties his wish for cooperation for the benefit of all Cypriots.

President Anstasiades was addressing on Wednesday the plenary of the House of Representatives after having been sworn in for a second term in office until 2023. Anastasiades was re-elected in the presidency of the Republic of Cyprus at the run-off election of February 4th.

At the same time, despite assuring that his foremost priority will be none other than dealing with the continued Turkish occupation of 37% of the island’s territory, he expressed his sorrow over the stance of the leadership of Turkish Cypriots.

He reiterated what I have also made clear to the UN Secretary General, that if Turkey’s illegal actions cease as well as the unacceptable positions and demands on the part of the Turkish Cypriots, I am ready to immediately engage in a new dialogue which will have to do with the internal aspects (of the Cyprus problem) and also to take part in a new Conference on Cyprus, provided that the necessary preparation has taken place and that the five permanent members of the Security Council and the EU will take part in it.

I have conveyed the above position to Mr Akinci (the Turkish Cypriot leader), via the UN SG’s Special Representative Elizabeth Spehar, President Anastasiades pointed out.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Efforts to reach a solution under UN auspices have so far been unsuccessful.

Referring to the country’s foreign policy he said he will continue the policy followed until today seeking, among others, to further deepen and enhance the Republic of Cyprus’ relations with neighbouring countries, the Gulf countries, the five UN Security Council permanent members and that he will continue to actively take part in EU developments and in shaping the EU’s common foreign policy.

He also said he would promote economic diplomacy with important members of the international system so that through our respective foreign policy we can ensure the unhindered implementation of our energy plans.

The Cyprus President presented the main areas of his government’s policy, recalling that this will be his last term in office and assuring of his readiness to cooperate with all for the benefit of Cyprus as whole. To that extent, he announced his intention to establish a team to study the manifestos of the other candidates in the Presidential elections so that proposals which will contribute towards the above goal will not be ignored.

He spoke of the government’s determination to implement the National Health System so that all the people will enjoy quality health services.

Everything that has been agreed on will be implemented within the time-frames as they have been defined, he stressed.

At the same time, he also assured that the government will continue a policy of zero tolerance on any form of corruption in public life, establishing further measures promoting transparency and accountability.

Our goal is to complete the reconstruction of the state which will lead to a Cyprus of a new era, he said.

This, he pointed out, is my vision for my second and last term in office which will continue to be one of passion, resolve, determination and the very strong will for cooperation with everyone.

Referring to non-performing loans the said that apart from the insolvency framework and enhancing the office of the Financial Commissioner and other legislation already passed the government will promote, in cooperation always with Parliament putting in place new tools, such as the establishment of a specialised organisation to more effectively deal with the problem.
