Cyprus President convenes National Council on Friday

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will convene on Friday the National Council, the countrys top advisory body, in order to brief its members about his informal meeting yesterday with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci and the latest developments on the Cyprus problem.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Klelia Vasiliou wrote on Twitter that President Anastasiades “will brief the National Countcil about his meeting with Akinci and current developments related to the Cyprus problem next Friday at 0900 in the morning,”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in the summer of 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

Anastasiades and Akinci, decided yesterday to go ahead with a series of Confidence Building Measures concerning, among other things, mobile telephony and interconnectivity of the electricity grids of the two communities in Cyprus.

The National Council is the countrys top advisory body and its membership includes parliamentary party leaders, the House of Representatives President and former Presidents of Cyprus.
