Cyprus President congratulates Truss, looks forward to working with her to further deepen bilateral relations

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, has congratulated the new UK Prime Minister, Liz Truss, noting that he looks forward to working with her to further enhance and deepen the bilateral relationship between Cyprus and the UK.

“Cyprus and the UK share historic ties and a strong bilateral relationship. I look forward to working with you to further enhance and deepen it,” Anastasiades said in a post on Twitter.

He added that “the UK’s consistent commitment as a guarantor power and P5 member of the UNSC to a settlement that reunifies Cyprus within the agreed UN parameters of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with political equality as defined in UNSC resolutions is always valued.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
