Cyprus Parliamentarians Nikos Tornaritis and Christakis Tziovanis attended the deliberations of the Standing Committee on Economic Regulation and Personnel Issues of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, which concluded on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi.
A press release circulated by PIO says that the Committee discussed issues relating to the financing of the Conventions activities and the operation of its Tehran-based Permanent Secretariat.
An extensive debate was held on the issue of revising the method of calculating members contributions to the Convention budget. Following a Cypriot proposal it was decided to refer the matter to the next Plenary Session of the Assembly.
In their interventions during the debate, Tornaritis and Tziovani highlighted the important role that Cyprus plays in the Assembly both as a bridge between Europe and Asia and as a pillar of stability and development in the Middle East region.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Cypriot delegation had the opportunity to exchange views on both the role of the Convention and the strengthening of bilateral relations, with Amal Al Qubaisi, the President of the United Arab Emirates National Council of the United Arab Emirates.
