Cyprus MP presents report on digital education during PACE meeting

Cyprus parliamentarian Kostis Efstathiou, presented Friday his report on the role of eduction in the digital era during a meeting of a standing committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg. The report was adopted unanimously by the committee.

According to an announcement by the Parliament, Efstathiou pointed out that what Europe needs nowadays is not only users of digital technology, but responsible citizens who will be able to acknowledge the risks and dangers and addess them in a responsible manner.

He also referred to the dangers related to democracy, the rule of law and human rights and pointed out that the negative effects of the reckless and irresponsible use of the internet and other social media should be stopped.

The Cyprus MP also said that we need to safeguard freedom of expression but also to limit exploitation of digital media, stop fake news and any form of violence. He also spoke of the role of education to this end, saying that students need to know the dangers and how to protect themselves.
