Cyprus marks Astronomy Day with an event at Presidential Palace

Cyprus on Thursday marked the World Astronomy Day with an event at the Presidential Palace in the presence of the Commissioner for the Environment Ioanna Panayiotou. Astronomy Day is celebrated on April 21st.

In a brief speech, Panayiotou said that the operation of the Astronomy Observatory in the Troodos Mountains, has many benefits for Cyprus with the utmost being the creation of the basic infrastructure for those who share a passion for astronomy.

The Commissioner said that the State has soon acknowledged the importance of astronomy and its contribution to science, society, culture, research and innovation, and adopted a very supportive stance.

She said that the Observatory will become an information and training centre for students and tourists, adding that it will contribute to the tourist development of Troodos area. Panayiotou also pointed out that space exploration can provide prospects and solutions in various areas including sustainable development.
