Cyprus-Jordan House Friendship Group meets with Speaker of Jordan’s House of Representatives

Energy, refugee crisis as well as bilateral and trilateral partnerships in the region were on the agenda of a meeting the Cyprus-Jordan House Friendship Group had on Thursday with Atef Al Tarawneh, Speaker of Jordans House of Representatives who is paying Cyprus an official visit.

Cyprus group comprises its Head, Yiorgos Lillikas and MPs Marinos Sizopoulos, Nikos Tornaritis, Adamos Adamou and Christiana Erotokritou.

According to a parliamentary announcement, during the meeting both sides expressed mutual satisfaction for the friendly and tight ties based on the joint commitment to maintaining regional peace and security on the basis of international law. They also expressed their wish for further enhancement of these ties on other levels.

The Cyprus MPs showed their understanding for the massive flows of refugees Jordan is faced with and they expressed Cyprus support within the EU in order for Jordan to be able to handle the consequences of the migration crisis.

The Jordanian Speaker and his delegation were briefed on the latest developments concerning the discovery of hydrocarbon deposits in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus, as well as the provocative actions of Turkey in the area.

During the meeting both sides referred to the importance of bilateral and trilateral agreements. As regards the trilateral cooperation between Cyprus-Greece-Jordan, it was pointed out that it can become a strong pillar for promoting security and further cooperation in the region.

The Cyprus Parliamentarians also discussed with the Speaker of the House of Jordan and the Aqaba Process, which is an initiative of the King of Jordan and its contribution to the fight against terrorism.

The Jordanian Speaker pointed out that the two countries, despite their small size, actively contribute to solving major challenges and maintaining stability and security in the region such as the refugee crisis and the Palestinian issue, referring to Cyprus support to this end.

The President of the Jordanian Parliament expressed the hope for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem and expressed his countrys support to Cyprus sovereign right to explore and exploit its natural resoursces.
