Cyprus is fully aligned with EU decisions on Ukraine, House President tells German parliamentarians

Cyprus is fully aligned with EU decisions as regards the Russian invasion to Ukraine, House President Annita Demetriou underlined to German parliamentarians.

Demetriou, who wraps up on Wednesday a working visit to Berlin, met yesterday separately with Michael Roth, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, and Committee members, and with Anton Hofreiter, Chair of the Committee on European Union Affairs, as well as Committee members.

According to a House announcement, Demetriou briefed German parliamentarians on the Cyprus issue and Turkey’s escalating provocations against Cyprus and Greece.

They also exchanged views on the impact of Russia’s invasion to Ukraine, which the EU is called to manage. The President of the House of Representatives underlined Cyprus’ alignment with EU decisions, while referring to the need for a collective response of complex challenges Europe is facing, including the energy and food crisis, environmental challenges and increasing migratory pressures.

On Tuesday House President Annita Demetriou also met with the President of the Bundestag Bärbel Bas.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
