Cyprus-France search and rescue exercise off Cyprus’ eastern coast

An international search and rescue exercise named CYFRA-01/18 was carried out on Monday in the sea area to the east of Cyprus, within the search and rescue region of the Republic of Cyprus, with the participation of aircraft from Cyprus and French frigate JEAN DE VIENNE.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Defence, the exercise was held within the framework of developing cooperation to address search and rescue incidents or emergencies, which may arise during activities within the exclusive economic zone and the search and rescue region of the Republic of Cyprus.

The Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Centre had the operational control and coordination of the aeronautical means taking part in the exercise, in cooperation with the French Navy.

The scenario of the exercise was an Open Sea Marine Accident and thus the Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Centre put in motion the National Search and Rescue Plan NEARCHOS to handle the incident.

The exercise is the first cooperation within 2018 in the context of long-term cooperation in search and rescue issues between the forces of the Republic of Cyprus and the aeronautical forces of France, which are active in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
