The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is making demarches expressing disappointment and dissatisfaction over the recent meeting Azerbaijan’s president held with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.
In a press release, it said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was disappointment and dissatisfied over the recent meeting of the Azeri president with the occupation leader and by making public the meeting, presenting Tatar as president of the “Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus”.
The action, the ministry said, is opposite with the letter and spirit of the UN Security Council resolutions which condemn the unilateral declaration of independence of the “trnc” pseudo state and recognise only the Republic of Cyprus as the sole state on the island.
In addition, Azerbaijan disregards the institutional framework on how the EU functions and is pursuing to establish an institutional relationship by signing a partnership agreement when it is well known that the consent of the Republic of Cyprus is necessary.
The FM points out that Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has already given instructions to make a demarche at various levels so that the disappointment and dissatisfaction of our side is conveyed, demanding rectification.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
