CYPRUS: Football Association suspends second division fixtures over match-fixing

The Cyprus Football Association has suspended the country’s second division fixtures over alleged match-fixing after receiving several notifications of suspicious betting activity from European football authority UEFA.

In a statement on Wednesday, the CFA said it decided to suspend the league after an in-depth discussion of the phenomenon of division two games possibly being fixed as suggested on several occasions by European football’s governing body.

The CFA said measures will be put in place in coordination with UEFA before the league is given the green light to resume. It also seeks to introduce tougher penalties for clubs found to be involved in match-fixing.

The CFA aims to make changes to the structure of the second division starting from next season, in connection with changes in other leagues, including the top flight.
