Petrides who is currently paying Rome a working visit at the invitation of the Italian Defence Minister, said in a statement on Thursday, that they discussed issues of bilateral defence cooperation and the security of the Mediterranean.

In this context, Cyprus and Italy, together with France and Greece, have established the quadripartite QUAD initiative, he added. “With my Italian counterpart we discussed ways to strengthen this initiative”, Petrides said. He noted that he highlighted the need for the eastern Mediterranean region to be designated as an area of special EU maritime interest.

He also said that, he “had the pleasure” of visiting the headquarters of the European Naval Operation IRINI. “The operation plays a particularly important role for security in the Libyan maritime area,” Petrides said, noting that he was “proud” because the Republic of Cyprus has supported the initiative from the beginning and is participating with National Guard personnel.
