Cyprus and USA renew MoU on the import of archaeological objects

The Republic of Cyprus and the United States of America signed today the renewal for another five years of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the imposition of restrictions on the import of archaeological objects including ecclesiastical, religious and ethnological objects dated up to 1850.

According to an announcement issued by the PIO, the Memorandum was initially put into force in 2002 and since then it has been renewed two more times for a five-year period each time, in 2007 and in 2012.

The renewal of the Memorandum reflects the US commitment to safeguard the cultural heritage of Cyprus and provides an opportunity for continuing the cooperation aimed at reducing the illegal trafficking of cultural objects. The Memorandum also strengthens the bilateral relations between Cyprus and USA, it is added.
