Cyprus and South Africa to sign MoU for cooperation in Higher Education

Minister of Education and Culture Kostas Champiaouris held an official visit to South Africa, 4-8 March, at the invitation of Naledi Pandor, Minister of Higher Education of South Africa, with the aim to develop a cooperation between the two countries in the field of Higher Education. To this end, a Memorandum of Understanding is expected to be signed between the two states .

A press release by the Ministry of Education, issued today, says that following an exchange of views, the two Ministers decided to proceed with the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the fields of Higher Education and Training between Cyprus and South Africa.

It is noted that the MoU is expected to strengthen the cooperation between universities and research centers in both countries and contribute to the Cyprus governments goal to turn Cyprus into an international educational and research center.

The Cypriot Minister extended an invitation to his South African counterpart to visit Cyprus in order to sign the MoU once consultations are finalised.

The press release says that during his stay in South Africa, the Minister visited the historic Western Cape University, the Cape Town University, the Cape Town Peninsula University of Technology and the Stellenbosch University, where he had the opportunity to meet with the Presidents and Rectors of the universities. He informed them about the higher education in Cyprus and invited them to visit Cyprus to continue the dialogue and determine fields of common interest for cooperation in Higher Education. His proposal was warmly welcomed by the academics.

The Minister also participated in events organised by the Greek and Cypriot diaspora.
