Cyprus and Jordan sign bilateral military cooperation programme

A bilateral military cooperation programme was signed, in Nicosia, on Friday, between Cyprus and Jordan, providing for practical actions such as joint exercises and training, Cypriot Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides said at a joint press conference with Lieutenant General Mahmoud A. Fraihat, Chairman of Jordan’s Armed Forces.

Jordan sees Cyprus as a friend who shares many of the same strategic challenges. We will continue to treasure our close relationship and seek ways to strengthen it, Fraihat said.

In order to protect Eastern Mediterranean and the people in the wider Levant and its unique heritage close diplomatic ties must be developed, he noted. This, he added, is the context in which a strong defence relationship between Cyprus and Jordan is so valued.

Referring to Jordan’s role in the region, he said we see Jordan as a key regional interlocutor. We understand the need for dialogue and pragmatism if ever there is to be peace, he added.

At the same time, he spoke of his country’s participation from the start in the global coalition against Daesh, noting that it plays an active role in expelling this evil from the region.

He also said that Jordan’s focus is on having a viable economy, a good education system and a society that cares for all its inhabitants, a situation complicated by the existence of so many refugees seeking safe haven from conflict. These issues will be successfully dealt with if the country is safe, secure and stable.”

On his part Fokaides said that this is the first visit the Chief of Jordan’s Armed Forces visits Cyprus, “which shows the importance of the visit as well as the significant steps we have taken in our relations ahead of the visit of King of Jordan in Cyprus soon.”

Cyprus and Jordan, the Cypriot Minister said, share a common cultural heritage in this region in which we have lived for centuries as well as strong friendship ties, mutual respect and trust.

“It is on this solid background and in the framework set by the leaders of the two countries that in the past few years we are building on a growing cooperation in the area of security and defence,” he added.

Referring to the Cooperation Memorandum which was signed during his visit to Jordan recently as well as the accreditation of a Defence Attache in Amman, based in Cairo.

The signature today of a Bilateral Military Cooperation Programme puts in practice practical actions, so that this cooperation can become even more fruitful to the mutual benefit of our countries in various areas, such as joint exercises, training and other joint programmes dealing with common threats, he pointed out.

Our common goal is to promote conditions of security, stability, peace and cooperation in our wider region, Fokaides noted.
