Cyprus and Greece are pillars of security and stability in an unstable region says Greek Minister of Defence [VIDEO]

Greek Defence Minister Evangelos Apostolakis said Wednesday that Cyprus and Greece are pillars of security, stability and regional cooperation in an unstable and turbulent neighborhood, speaking after his meeting with his Cypriot counterpart, Savvas Angelides.

During his first official visit abroad after assuming his duties, Apostolakis said that Greece always supports Cyprus in its struggle and that the two countries follow the direction of progress, development, peace and cooperation of peoples.

“Our goal is to serve, through internationally recognized principles and international law, peace, security, stability and cooperation in the region,” he said.

He added that frequent meetings and high-level visits have already helped to upgrade the level of coordination and synergy between the Greek and Cypriot Armed Forces.

We have completed a significant number of joint actions, and we have started implementing decisions that promote this strategic partnership and improve our effectiveness,” he said.

Cyprus’ Defence Minister Savvas Angelides said that they discussed with his counterpart issues of bilateral and European interest, as well as issues concerning initiatives that Greece and Cyprus jointly take for regional security and cooperation as two countries that are pillars of stability and credibility in the region.

“Cyprus and Greece, as Member States of the European Union, on the southeastern border of Europe, we aim to strengthen our bridging role between Europe and the Middle East. At the same time, we continue to work to establish partnerships for dialogue and cooperation in the region,” he said.

He added that stability was also promoted through Tripartite Strategic Partnerships developed with friendly countries in the region, while contributing to addressing security challenges and promoting maritime and energy security , taking into account the significant energy prospects of the Eastern Mediterranean.

He also referred to Turkey’sprovocative actions in the field, violating fundamental principles of International Law and the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, while at the same time raising doubts to the sovereign rights of Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea.

“We will not follow the path of Turkey. With the International Law as an ally, we are following Turkeys moves and we are ready to face the situations with unity, composure and determination,” he said.

Greece, he added, is the permanent and selfless supporter of Cyprus in its struggle for national survival and expressed his gratitude for the continuous and uninterrupted assistance of the Greek Government as well as for the support of the Greek people in the struggle to find a fair and a viable solution to the Cyprus problem.
