Cyprus and France to expand their cooperation on energy, security and defence, Minister says

Defence Minister Savvas Angelides, said on Wednesday that the cooperation between Cyprus and France is of strategic importance, adding that we are constantly working towards expanding it” in the fields of energy, security and defence.

Our cooperation with France is at the best level, Angelides stressed, in statements to the media after the talks which delegations of the governments of Cyprus and Greece, under Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had in Nicosia, to discuss developments in the Cyprus problem and further coordinate their actions.

Asked about the coordination between Cyprus and Greece on defence and security issues, the Minister said that “we continue to work keeping a low profile, in substantive way and with determination, with a view achieve the best possible result.” We are doing quite a lot of work, keeping a low profile, he added.

Asked whether discussions between Cyprus and France held in Nicosia on Tuesday can contribute to further promoting security in the region, Angelides said that Cyprus cooperation with France is of strategic importance, adding that they are working to expand it in the fields of energy, security and defence.

Invited to say when this cooperation will be expanded, in view of what the French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday in Nicosia, Angelides said that what Macron announced are the issues on which we are working daily, atthe two countries Defence Ministries, and at the competent headquarters, with a view to evaluate the matters which concern both countries, adding that there is very good cooperation with tangible results.

He said that some of these results, however, cannot be publicized, stressing that Cyprus cooperation with France is at the best level.

Invited to say if announcements will be made concerning new agreements with France, he said that “once there are announcements to be made you will be the first to know them.”

Referring to the talks which he had this morning in Nicosia with the Greek National Defence Minister Evangelos Apostolakis, Angelides said that they had the opportunity to discuss about the two countries further cooperation in the framework of their EU membership as well as their bilateral relations.

He also noted that during themeeting they attended with Anastasiades and Tsipras, defence and security issues were discussed among others.

Asked about Turkish actions in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone, the Minister said that they are concerned with what is going on, adding that they are evaluating the situation constantly, adding that “we are continuing to implement our energy programme in an unobstructed way, always in cooperation with Greece.”
