Cyprus aims to improve tourism competitiveness, Minister says

The government aims to improve the competitiveness of Cyprus tourist product, by coordinating action between the public and the private sector, Tourism Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis said on Thursday.

Addressing a seminar, in Protaras, on sustainable tourism, Lakkortypis also said that the industry comprises a central pillar of economic development, and contributes significantly to the countrys GDP and in attracting investment.

He cited, moreover, official data showing that more than 29,000 people were employed in hotels and restaurant businesses, in 2015, a number amounting to 8% of total employment in that year.
