Cypriot MPs ask for concrete measures against Turkish provocations in contacts with French officials

Turkey’s escalating provocations in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus were on the agenda of a series of contacts Cypriot MPs held in the French Parliament, stressing the need for the EU to apply the principle of solidarity by taking concrete measures against Turkeys invasion in Cyprus’ EEZ.

A delegation of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs/Cyprus France Friendship Group in the Parliament paid a three day visit to Paris, at the invitation of the French Senate.

A press release from the Parliament said that the delegation met with the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed forces Christian Cambon and the Chairman of the European Affairs Committee Jean Bizet. At the National Assembly the MPs were received by Vice-President Carole Bureau-Bonnard and held separate meetings with other officials.

They also attended a working lunch hosted by the the Head of the France-Cyprus Friendship Group in the Senate Nelly Tocqueville.

The Cypriot MPs expressed sincere appreciation for the principled stance of France on both the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and the illegal Turkish activities in the Republic of Cyprus EEZ, notes the press release.

Unfortunately, they said, the prospects for resuming talks are moving further away due to Turkeys persistence in its claims to maintain the anachronistic guarantees, the right for unilateral intervention and Turkish troops in Cyprus, but also due to escalating Turkish provocations against the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus within its EEZ in violation of international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, it is noted.

The Cypriot MPs stressed the need for the EU to apply the principle of solidarity by taking concrete measures against Turkeys invasion in Cyprus’ EEZ, which is part of the EU’s EEZ.

The French officials reiterated France’s full support of Cyprus as well as their country’s concerns on a possible exacerbation of tension in the highly sensitive area of the Eastern Mediterranean, said the press release.
