Cypriot MP conveys President’s message to Yildirim

Member of the parliament and Vice President of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Nicos Tornaritis conveyed a message by Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades to the Prime Minister of Turkey Binali Yildirim underlining Anastasiades readiness for a Cyprus settlement.

According to CNA sources, Tornaritis, who had a brief discussion with Yildririm during the plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly in Istanbul, also noted that Turkey must withdraw its troops and guarantees from Cyprus.

The Cypriot MP conveyed Anastasiades regards to Yildirim and asked the Turkish Premier about the situation as regards the Cyprus problem. Yildirim replied that Turkey did its utmost on this issue, and Tornaritis said that this is not exactly the case and that there must be no guarantees and permanent presence of troops for the Cyprus problem to be solved.

We are ready to return to a well prepared International Conference on Cyprus, Tornaritis said, while Yildirim noted that whatever happens will happen after January.

Meanwhile, addressing the Asian Parliamentary Assembly 10th plenary session, Tornaritis said that Cyprus can be a bridge of peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Moreover the member of the Cypriot delegation Christakis Giovannis underlined in his intervention the urgent need to boost efforts for the protection of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Asia.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
