Cuban Ambassador reiterates principled position on Cyprus problem

New Cuban Ambassador in Cyprus Omar Levya Rafull has reiterated his countrys principled position on the solution of the Cyprus problem during a meeting he had with House of Representatives President Demetris Syllouris, on Tuesday.

Syllouris welcomed the new Ambassador to Cyprus commending the excellent relations between Cyprus and Cuba, including at parliamentary level, a parliament press release issued here today says.

He referred to recent developments as regards Turkeys provocative behaviour within the Republic of Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone and expressed his disappointment over the tolerance shown by the international community in the face of Turkish provocations in both Cyprus and Syria.

SAIPEM 12000 drillship, commissioned by Italian energy company ENI, to start drilling operations in block 3 of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) was halted by five Turkish warships last Friday morning while making a new effort to reach Soupia target, which it was unable to fulfil due to Turkish threats.

Two weeks ago Saipem had to halt its transfer journey to block 3 of Cyprus EEZ, when it was stopped by Turkish military ships with a notice not to continue because there would be military activities in the destination area.

On his part the Cuban Ambassador thanked Syllouris, the House of Representatives and the Cypriot people in general for their long standing and firm support if Cuba.

“He further reiterated the principled position his country holds as regards the solution of the Cyprus problem, underlining the importance of the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus,” the press release says. He also stressed that the solution of the Cyprus problem should be in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Efforts to reach a solution under UN auspices have so far been unsuccessful.

The press release continues that Rafful also spoke of the need for all member states to ratify the Cooperation Agreement between Cuba and the EU so that it can be implemented as soon as possible. Syllouris expressed the Parliaments readiness to help towards that end.

The two men also exchanged views on how to further enhance relations between the two countries and expressed their willingness to deepen cooperation referring in particular to the areas of health and tourism.
